The Taipei Biennial, organized by the Taipei Museum of Fine Arts, is coming again on Sept 13, 2008, until January 4, 2009. It will be curated by Manray Hsu and Vasif Kortun. The Taipei Biennial will be mostly held in the Taipei Fine Arts Museum. However, this year's exhibition will also showcase outside of the museum and displayed in open-air venues around Taipei. These outdoor venues include projects in the Beer Brewery, the mega-digital screen at the Taipei Arena, in Taipei Art Park, at the Zhongxiao Xinsheng MRT Station, and an intervention at No.13, Qidong Street. Further, the exposition does not have a single theme, but a collection of correlated themes. Most themes would address the chaotic states of things in this time of globalization.
The Taipei Biennials used to be 2 separated exhibition projects between 1984 and 1991. In 1992, the two exhibitions were consolidated to form today's Taipei Biennial. Starting in 1998, the exposition began to invite internationally-renowned curators to cooperate with curators from Taiwan. Since then, the Taipei Biennial has introduced new artistic ideas from around the world that act as a bridge between Taiwan and other cultures. It also becomes a primary symbol of Taiwan's contemporary art development and international artistic exchange.
A large number of Asian cities are planned to open art biennials in 2008, including Gwangju in South Korea, Yokohama in Japan, Singapore, Sydney in Australia, and Shanghai in China. Most of the events will begin in the month of September.
